Heerekai Payla is a delicious regional vegetarian recipe from North Karnataka. Made with Ridge Gourd with a robust of flavors, is an easy vegetarian curry recipe typically enjoyed as a side dish with Roti or Rice.
I’m not a Ridge Gourd fan, but this recipe definitely made me fall in love with this vegetable. I’m going to relish it more often. I personally added a dollop of ghee on top before serving and enjoyed with hot phulkas.
To make Heerekai Palya:
To make this delicious Ridge Gourd curry firstly wash and peel ridge gourd and cut into 2 inch slices. Collect all ingredients mentioned under “To Grind” and blend to make a smooth paste. You can adjust water accordingly. Heat oil in a wok and add curry leaves, cumin, mustard and dried red chili. As soon as they splutter, add chopped onions and saute till they sweat. Now add chopped tomatoes and ridge gourd pieces in the wok and mix well. Cook for 5 mins and then add the prepared paste into the wok. Mix all till everything incorporates. Adjust water as per required consistency and add salt to taste. Close lid and let the curry cook for another 6-7 mins. Turn off the gas and serve hot Heerekai Payla with roti or rice.
