Gulgule – Sweet Banana and Fennel Fritters

by Shaheen Ali

Gulgule… The name itself say it all for this cute lil sweet fritters. Small round golden fritters flavored with banana and fennel are a must make at my home during Ramadan. The size of Gulgule totally depends on personal choice. This i guess was the first home made sweet i had during my childhood. Ever since i have a strong fonding towards Gulgule. The name has no specific meaning. Just because the fritters are small and round in shape, they were name as Gol Gole (That means Round balls) which later became gulgule.

Gulgule also has a certain traditional significance in few states of India. In U.P (Uttar Pradesh) this happens to be the first dish that i cooked by the new bride in her kitchen. Then later she gets gifts and rewards for this. These fried blobs also are a commonly made snack in rainy season. Simple and easy….let’s check the recipe now.
