Steamed Veg Momo

by Shaheen Ali

A famous street food and a staple from Nepal that has now captured the Indian food market as well. Momos can be referred as  the first cousin of Chinese Baozi , Japanese Gyoza and our very popular Indian Kozhukatta. Originated in Nepal and Tibet , the momos come in two basic version, fried and steamed. Though the original is the steamed version but we Indians derived the fried version too which somehwre resembles a lot to the sweet Modaks. Veg or Chicken, these are the two main options which we have in  momos.

White flour dough, rolled out , stuffed with veg or chicken and then folded and steamed is easy to make but the assembling and shape of the momo comes with a lil practice. I made it for the first time at home, so may be that is the reason why the shape doesn’t look that perfect like the authentic ones, But as they say, practice makes one perfect, so i’m sure you will be able to make it easily. Let us check out the recipe now …

  6. Now add the copped onions and the grated vegetables and saute till the moisture vaporize.
  7. Now add soy sauce, pepper powder and salt, stir fry everything for couple of minutes, turn off the gas and allow it to cool.
  8. How to make momos :
  9. Pinch a small marble sized dough and roll it to make a ball.
  10. Flatten the ball on a dusted counter and roll out to make a thin puri.
  11. Take a teaspoon of filling and place it in the center of the rolled puri.

  13. Assemble all together and pinch the top to seal the opening.
  14. Similarly make many more momos from the remaining dough and the filling.
  15. Heat a bamboo steamer (traditional one) or any normal steamer which you use to make idli or dhokla.
  16. Place a banana leaf on the base where you will be keeping the momos to steam. If you don't have a leaf then simple grease the vessel and place the momos and steam for 20 -25 mins or till they are properly cooked.
